List of martyred intellectuals being scrutinised: Quader

Names will be disclosed next year: Liberation War minister
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The Awami League general secretary, Obaidul Quader, has said the government is scrutinising the existing list of martyred intellectuals, who were the victims of target killings in the final hours of the Liberation War in 1971. “There is a list of martyred intellectuals. It is now being scrutinised whether there is any fault in the list. The existing list will be amended,” he said while responding to reporters' queries after paying tribute to the martyred intellectuals on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day yesterday (Saturday). Quader said the evil communal power that attacked Bengali freedom fighters in 1971 and killed intellectuals is still spreading poison.

“It’s our pledge today to prevent and defeat this evil communal power. We’ll take oath to root out the poison of communalism. We’ll unite the nation,” he said.

Just two days ahead of the country’s victory on this day 48 years ago, the marauding Pakistan army, in collusion with their local collaborators — Al- Badr, Al-Shams, and Razakars — killed the most prominent intellectuals of the country in a bid to cripple the newly emerging nation of Bangladesh.

The martyrs included university teachers, journalists, litterateurs and doctors, who were targeted not only because of their work in their own fields, but also for their firm commitment to Bengali nationalism and Bangladesh.

Speaking to the media on the issue, Liberation War affairs minister, AKM Mozammel Haque, said the full list of martyred intellectuals will be revealed to the nation in the coming year.

“We have a list of 300 martyred intellectuals and we have been working on this. We need more time to prepare the final list of martyred intellectuals. After scrutinising the list, we will make it public next year before the Martyred Intellectuals Day,” he said after placing wreaths at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial and Rayerbazar Killing Ground at Mohammadpur yesterday morning.

Replying to questions from newsmen over another issue, Obaidul Quader, Road, Transport and Bridges Minister, said legal action should be taken against "Daily Sangram" for describing executed war criminal Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla as a "martyr".

“We’ll talk to the home ministry about this,” he said. While responding to reporters' query about war criminals staying abroad, the minister said: “We are looking into the matter. Action will be taken in time.”

He said the government is also trying its best to bring back the killers who fled the country.
