Three dead in Nepal bomb blast

AFP, Kathmandu

Three people, including a police official, were killed when a bomb exploded in southern Nepal early yesterday. The device detonated outside a local residence after the owner called the police to report a suspicious object on his premises in Dhanusha district. “The blast occurred just as our team reached there to investigate. The owner, his son and a member of our force were killed,” senior police official Pradhumna Karki told AFP.

 

Thai oppn frontman to lead anti-military rally

Bangkok braced yesterday for the first major protest since March elections, a test of anti-government sentiment among younger Thais called to the streets by the kingdom’s most popular political figure. The youth-propelled Future Forward Party (FFP) has been a thorn in the military-aligned establishment’s side since the elections, and its popular billionaire leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit had called for a late afternoon rally the party expects to draw thousands. Thailand’s political scene has been dominated by violence since 2006, with street protests devolving into blood-soaked disorder.

 

US defense chief chides NATO ‘free riders’

AFP, Washington

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Friday defended Washington’s pressuring NATO allies to contribute more money toward their own defense, saying the Western alliance cannot permit “free riders.” Responding to questions at the Council on Foreign Relations about President Donald Trump’s criticism of other NATO members, Esper said the United States was not being unreasonable to demand they spend more.

 

Jihadists execute four hostages in Nigeria

AFP, Paris

Jihadists have executed four Nigerian hostages held since July, French aid group Action Against Hunger said, adding that one of its staff and two drivers were among those killed. The four were among six hostages abducted and held by the jihadists in northeastern Nigeria, the Paris-based NGO said. “The armed group responsible for the kidnapping of humanitarian workers on July 18 have murdered four hostages,” Action Against Hunger said in a statement on Friday that did not identify the victims.

 

17 killed in DR Congo attacks

 Seventeen 17 people have died in three attacks in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo hit by chronic unrest, the army and local observers said Friday. Two of the attacks in Ituri province were attributed to the Codeco militia that has also been accused of a civilian massacre in June. An army spokesman, lieutenant Jules Ngongo, told AFP that the three latest deaths occurred “during an attack by militia fighters very early on Friday.”
