Road crash kills 2 in Gopalganj

UNB, Gopalganj

Two people were killed when a covered-van hit a peddled-van on Dhaka-Khulna Highway at Dhundia in Sadar upazila yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Manjur Sardar, 50, of Tebaria in Sadar upazila and Mamun Shikdar, 60 of Kashiani upazila.

The accident took place around 8:30am when the Dhaka-bound covered-van hit a van carrying two people, leaving the duo dead on the spot, said Sub-Inspector of Sadar Police Station Saiful Islam.

On information, police recovered the bodies and seized the covered-van.

 

AL leader’s son caught while snatching in Satkhira

UNB, Satkhira

Locals in Satkhira have caught district woman Awami League leader’s son in the act of snatching a person’s mobile phone.

Abrar Jahin, son of Josna Ara, district Women Awami League General Secretary and councillor of Satkhira municipality, was fleeing after snatching a mobile phone at Dohakula intersection of Sadar upazila on Tuesday night. Later, they handed him over to police.

SI Hasanuzzaman, in-charge Brommorajpur police outpost, said that Sagor Mistry, son of Nironjon Mistry of Boiarbatan area, was watching a film on his mobile phone at a location in between Ramchondropur and Dohakula. At this time, driving a motorbike Jahin tried to flee after snatching the cell phone straight from the hands of Sagor.

Hearing the hue and cry raised by Sagor, the local residents blocked the motorcycle by putting up a barricade and prevented his escape. Later, he was handed over to police.

Mostafizur Rahman, OC of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, said a snatching case was lodged against Abrar Jahin.

On Wednesday Jahin was produced before a Satkhira court.

 

Juba League leader killed by expelled member

UNB, Bogura

An expelled Juba League activist killed another Juba League member by lacerating his tendons here on Wednesday.

Quamrul Islam, 38, a drug peddler and an expelled general secretary of Nimgachhi union unit of JL, called Abdus Sabur, 36, a member of Dhunot Upazila JL and village doctor, at around 2pm in the afternoon to an abandoned house in Poshchim Nondiarpar area for talks over a land dispute.

Sources in the locality said that there was long-standing enmity between Quamrul Islam and Abdus Sabur centering the said land dispute.

At one stage an altercation broke out between them, and 4-5 people including Quamrul, Sabuj Mia, son of Shams Uddin, Sagor Mia, son of Shafiqul Islam and Bipul Hossain, son of Suruj Mia, all of the same village, swooped on Sabur with sharp weapons, lacerating his tendons.

Later, they left the body there. Afterwards, being informed by locals, the police recovered the body and brought it to the police station.

Sheikh Motiur Rahman, president of Dhunot Upazila Juba League, informed that Quamrul Islam had been expelled from the post of General Secretary of Nimgachhi Union Juba League as he was arrested by police about 10 months back along with yaba.

He demanded immediate arrest of the accused for the killing of Abdus Sabur and to bring them under the purview of law.

Ismail Hossain, OC of Dhunot police station, said there were marks of injuries inflicted by sharp weapons in various parts of the body. Efforts are on for immediate arrest of those involved in the incident, he added.
