Five BCL men held

Our Correspondent, Rajshahi

Members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) have arrested the five accused in assaulting the principal of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute from various areas under Belpukur police station of the city. The five accused persons are: Kamal Hossain Sourav, 24, a student of the computer technology department; Murad Hossain, 19, a student of the elections department; Sabbir Ahmed Shanto, 22, a student of the power technology department; Salman Tony, 22, a student of the electro-medical department; and Rahianul Islam Hasib, 21.

All of them are members of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). Sourav, the main accused, was joint secretary of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute unit. He was suspended from the BCL following the incident.

RMP additional deputy commissioner Ruhul Kuddus said that acting on a tip-off, they came to know that Sourav had been hiding at Belpukur area along with some followers. A team of BD police raided the area on Monday night and nabbed four of them.

Meanwhile, another team of Chandrima police station conducted a drive and arrested Hasib from the Hatikumrul area in Sirajganj district.

Earlier, the police arrested 13 people from various places of the district. But none of them were involved in the case.

However, this time, the law enforcers were able to arrest the five accused in the case after 17 days of the incident.

On November 2, a group of BCL activists assaulted and pushed the principal of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute Engineer Farid Uddin Ahmed into a pond on the campus for not allowing two of them to write the exams. Later, the institute authorities filed a case mentioning names of eight students and 50 others unnamed under Chandrima police station.
