Group show ‘Odds and Ends’ starts at AFD today

A 11-day group art exhibition titled ‘Odds and Ends’, by a group of students from the Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka, will begin today at Galerie Zoom of Alliance Française de Dhaka (AFD) in the capital’s Dhanmondi area

The inaugural ceremony of the exhibition will take place this evening on the gallery premises, where Professor Jamal Ahmed, Department of Drawing and Painting, Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony as the chief guest and Manzoor Hasan, executive director, Centre for Peace and Justice, BRAC University as the special guest.

The participating artists in the exhibition are-- Afia Airin, Ajay Shanyal, Anika Tasnim, Shakil Mozumder, Purnia Mrittika, Shipra Bishwas and Rony Mandol.

The artists said about their exhibition, “The role of artists in the society is monumental. Truly, there are no alternatives to practising art when it comes to illuminating the social psyche. The social psyche comprises of manifold vantage points, needs, wants, and attention spans that may sum up to an impenetrable wall of noirishness that only art can break through. So, artists have to try to be very clear in articulating their purpose and sort of ‘ride’ their art where both expression and communication may manifest ideas in various cogitable forms. This art exhibition is an attempt at that.”

More than thirty artworks in various media such as watercolour, acrylic, oil, woodcut, mixed media, among others will be exhibited.

The exhibition will remain open to all November 29 and can be visited according to the following schedule: Monday to Thursday from 3pm to 9pm, Friday and Saturday from 9am to12 noon as well as 5pm to 8pm (closed on Sunday).

Where: AFD, 26 Mirpur Road, Dhanmondi

When: Inauguration: 5:30pm, today
