Man awarded death penalty for killing wife for dowry

A court here on Wednesday sentenced to death a man on charge of beating his wife to death for dowry. Advocate Jahurul Haider Babu, Public Prosecutor of Satkhira Women and Children Repression Prevention Special Tribunal, said the tribunal awarded death sentence to husband Ronjon Mondol, 37, on charge of beating his wife Swapna Rani to death for dowry of Tk 50,000 Hosne Ara Akter, Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal gave the verdict at a crowded court in the afternoon.

Advocate Jahurul Haider Babu informed that Ranjan Mondol, son of Rabin Mondol of Jalalabad, used to torture Swapna Mondol. On June 9 in 2012, he has beaten to death his wife at his house demanding dowry of Tk 50,000

Brother of the deceased Shibpodo Das lodged a murder case with Kolaroa police station as plaintiff accusing six people.

SI Golam Sarwar Molla, the investigation officer of the case, submitted charge-sheet in the court after completion of further investigation on July 12 in 2012.

The court announced the death sentence against the accused after the evidence regarding the killing was proved true after the witnesses taken from nine people.

The husband Ranjan Mondol was absent in the court as he was absconding on bail before the verdict.

Man arrested for ‘raping’ handicapped girl in Jashore

UNB, Jashore

Police arrested a man for allegedly raping a mentally impaired young girl at Panchkari village in Manirampur upazila on Wednesday.

The arrestee was identified as Shibpada Roy, son of Kalipada Roy of the village.

Shikdar Matier Rahman, officer-in-charge of Manirampur Police Station, said the mother of the 13-year-old girl, hailing from Dumuria upazila in Khulna district, filed a case with the police station on Tuesday night accusing Shibpada. Later, police raided the house of Shibpada at night and arrested him.

According to the case statement, the victim along with her mother came to her maternal uncle’s house for celebrating Durga Puja.

On October 27, Shibpada took the girl to his house while returning from a puja mandap at night and raped her.

‘Drug peddler’ held in C'nawabganj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged drug peddler with 415 bottles of contraband Indian phensidyl from a litchi orchard at Rashiknagar village under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj district yesterday.   

The arrestee was identified as Md Ismail Hossain, 23, son of late Monirul Islam of Ranihati village under Shibganj upazila of the district.

Rapid Action Battalion sources said acting on secret information, an operation team of Rapid Action Battalion-5 from Chapainawabganj camp raided the aforesaid area at around 12.45am and arrested Ismail with the bottles of phensidyl.

Later, the arrested person was handed over to Shibganj Police Station. A case was filed in this connection.  

World Diabetes Day observed

The World Diabetes Day was observed with great enthusiasm in Rajbari district yesterday. Marking the day a colourful rally was brought out from Rajbari Diabetic Hospital premises which ended at the same place.  

Kazi Eradot Ali, general secretary of District Awami League (in charge) attended the programme as chief guest while Md Waziullah Mantu, vice president of Rajbari Diabetic Hospital was in the chair.  

A discussion meeting was also organised by Bangladesh Diabetic Association, Rajbari district unit, at Diabetic Hospital conference room. Among others, advocate Gonesh Narayan Chowdhury, charted president of Rajbari Rotary Club, Abdus Salam Mondal, president, Rajbari Rotary Club, Khan Mohammad Jahurul Haque, president of Rajbari Press Club, Dr Apurbo Roy, superintendent of the diabetic hospital  and Md Jahangir Hossain , member of diabetic hospital were present at the meeting.
