63-bigha orchard flattened overnight

Twelve mango farmers of a village in Naogaon have been rendered destitute by an audacious crime as miscreants felled some 10,000 mango trees from 63 bighas of an orchard shared between them. “We don’t have hostility towards anyone and none of us have any enemy. We have no idea who did this,” said one of the mango growers.

The mango orchard was established on more than on 63 bighas of land in the village of Jamalpur, located within Tilna union in the upazila of Sapahar.

“There were plenty of mangoes all over the orchard and we more than 100 mango farmers raised the orchard by nurturing the trees as our children,” was the common lament of those who lost everything to this brazen act.

It all happened on Tuesday night. By the time the 12 farmers heard anything and and visited the scene, the entire 63-bighas was flattened. Initially they were stunned into silence.

Mukter Hossain, belonging to the same village, enjoyed one of the larger stakes in the orchard - his trees covered 11 bighas of the orchard.

He could only rue what he would miss. “There was such a good harvest from the mango trees last season. Next year again there would be lots of mangoes...,” he said.

If all went well, the 12 growers estimated they could sell mangoes worth a combined Tk 1 crore from the 10,000 trees on the 63 bighas of land.

The affected mango growers Feroz Hossain, Subol Kumar, Afzal Hossain and Hafiz Uddin echoed the same sentiment.

On Wednesday, Sapahar Upazila Chairman Md Shahjahan Hossain, UNO Kallayan Chowdhury and OC of Sapahar police station Md Abdul Hye visited the spot.

The police is working to find the guilty parties for the felling of trees at the dead of night.

It is presumed that the mass felling of trees may have stemmed from a land or familial dispute. Investigation is going on. It is expected that the accused would be detained at the earliest.

A case has been filed with Sapahar police station in this connection.
