PM visits UAE tomorrow

Three deals likely to be signed
DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will make an official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during November 16–19 and talk on various issues, including more investment by UAE investors in Bangladesh. Three agreements are expected to be signed between the two countries: (i) on the bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh Investment Development Authority and Emirates Development Authority; (ii) between Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority and Emirates Economic Zone Authority and; (iii) and a protocol is also expected to be signed on allotment of land plots for the Bangladesh embassy in Abu Dhabi. Foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said this at a press briefing at his ministry in the capital yesterday.

He also said Prime Minister Hasina is expected to meet big UAE investor groups and businesspersons of the UAE. The Prime Minister will be accompanied by the foreign minister, principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division, secretary of defence ministry, secretary of the civil aviation ministry, and other senior officials.

Momen said a number of investors have shown interest in investing in Bangladesh. UAE development delegations visited Bangladesh several times on different occasions in this regard, he added.

“The DP World of UAE showed interest in developing a sea port and related infrastructure in Bangladesh. The office of the royal family member Sheikh Ahmed Dalmuk al Maktoum has shown interest in different power-related and dredging

projects in Bangladesh. Apart from this, the Emirates Economic

Zone Authority is interested in establishing cooperation with the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority. The delegation has already visited Bangladesh a couple of times,” the foreign minister said.

He also said the Emirates Economic Zone would like to invest in infrastructure and local employment in Bangladesh.

“They would like to invest in the waste management sector and create a hub in the Bangladesh Economic Zone for international exports of Halal products to the Gulf countries. It is also expected that UAE entrepreneurs and officials of their investment authority will meet the Prime Minister,” he added.

The foreign minister also revealed that the Prime Minister would inaugurate the national identity (NID) registration programme of the non-resident Bangladeshis living in the UAE at the embassy of Abu Dhabi. “The registration facility is expected to benefit the Bangladesh expatriates living in the UAE for whom it is difficult to come to Bangladesh for the registration purpose as it involves expenditure and time,” he added.

Momen said the Prime Minister will also attend the Dubai Air Show-2019 and other programmes during her visit.

The Prime Minister is also expected to meet His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashed al Maktoum, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Her Highness Sheikh Fatima Bint Mubarak.

During the PM’s visit, the foreign minister is expected to attend a programme on November 19 to inaugurate the training programme, jointly organised by Bangladesh Consulate General, Dubai, and the Bangladesh Association in Sharjah, on the skill development of Bangladesh expatriate workers.

“The Bangladesh Consulate General will provide training on language skill development, computer, driving and personality development on the consulate premises for Bangladesh expatriate workers,” said Momen.

“Such training will help our expatriates to develop their skills and assist them to get better jobs,” he also said.

“It is expected that the visit will have a positive impact on the UAE investment in Bangladesh in different sectors. It  will also help enhance the cooperation between the investment authorities,” he added.

The foreign minister also said Prime Minister Hasina would pay an official visit to Kolkata on November 22 at the invitation of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi to watch the Bangladesh–India Test match at Eden Gardens.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will visit Kolkata on November 22 and return home on the same day after spending a couple of hours at Eden Gardens. She will be treated as a state guest. However, Narendra Modi won’t be able to meet her because of his pre-engagement,” he added.

It is expected that the Indian home minister, Amit Shah, will also be present at Eden Gardens.
