Solve vegetable seedling producers’ problem

Solve vegetable seedling
producers’ problem

It is worrying to note that shortage of capital, coupled with the rising prices of various farm inputs, have put the vegetable seedling producers of Cumilla district in a big trouble. According to farmers, excessive rain from the very beginning of the current season disrupted production on one hand and delayed their sale on the other, leaving no option for them but to throw away the previously-planted seedlings that had grown old.

The growers have already incurred huge financial losses as they had to prepare the seedbeds anew and plant seeds again. The grievances of the seedling growers are genuine as most of them do not have their own land and have to take land on lease for producing seedlings. Before growing seedlings the farmers have to go through various stages like preparing the land, ploughing, buying insecticides, bamboo, seeds, fertiliser and polythene, among others. The main problem facing most farmers is lack of capital that forces them to take loans on high interest.

Cultivation of vegetables without seedlings cannot be thought of. Winter season is approaching. During this season vegetables like tomato, cauliflower, cabbage, chili, brinjal, bitter gourd, onion, snake gourd, pumpkin, ridge gourd and luffa gourd will be grown. Lack of seedlings will hamper cultivation of vegetables greatly. Vegetable production has increased remarkably in the country during the last few years.

Consumption of vegetables has also increased during the last few years with the increasing population. But production boost is not everything. The growers and the consumers will have to be properly benefited from it. Since vegetable is a perishable commodity, it has to be preserved properly. If growers do not get due prices of their produce, they will be frustrated. In that case, bumper output will be a bane for them instead of boon. If cold storages are set up in different areas of the country, farmers will be able to preserve their vegetables and sell them at good prices.

Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy of our country. Hence, there is no scope to take the vegetable seedling growers problem lightly. The government, particularly the Department of Agriculture Extension, should come to the aid of the farmers. Bangladesh Krishi Bank can provide the growers with interest-free loans or loans on easy terms and conditions.
