ACC Emerging Cup kicks off tomorrow

SPORTS REPORTER, Dhaka

Nepal became the first team amongst the participating seven foreign teams to arrive in Dhaka to play the upcoming ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup-2019.

The eight-nation tournament, previously was scheduled to get underway on November 12 has been delayed by two days, will now begin on November 14.

Afghanistan followed the suits of Nepal, who has been included at the eleventh hour in lieu of United Arab Emirates (UAE), to reach in the capital city of Bangladesh to play the fourth edition of the tournament which is being hosted by Bangladesh for the second time since 2017.

Both Nepal and Afghanistan held their closed-door training session at the National Cricket Academy of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, where media was barred to enter the ground and taking any footage of the session.

However, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced their 15-member squad for the tournament, where they picked five players including Soumya Sarkar, Mohammad Naim Sheikh, all-rounder Afif Hossain, Aminul Islam Biplob, Abu Haider Rony, who all already returned home from India, playing T20 series.

Nazmul Hossain Shanto will lead Bangladesh in the tournament on home soil for whom they picked leg-spinner Minhajul Abiden Afridi beside Aminul Islam. They also chose left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam with the spin attack.

Even though it’s a tournament for the U-23 players, four players could be included whose age over 23. But Bangladesh kept only two players, whose age over 23. Soumya is now at 26 along with 24-year-old off-spin all-rounder Mahedi Hasan.

Giving an explanation to pick the experienced Soumya in the Emerging Team, BCB selector Habibul Bashar Sumon said they want to see him in runs that will boost him mentally and make him confident in international cricket.

“As Soumya is not in the Test series, he could be played those matches after returning home. A good competition is now expecting to held in Emerging Cup. It will be a good match practice for him,” Habibul Bashar Sumon said.

By and large, High Performance, Bangladesh ‘A’ Team and Emerging Team have been formed by the regular players. Pacer Hasan Mahmud got his maiden call-up at this stage along with Sumon Khan.

A total of eight teams, splitting into two groups-A and B- will participate in the tournament. Hosts Bangladesh have been drawn with India, Hong Kong and Nepal, while Group-B has been pitted b Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Oman.

Cox’s Bazar and BKSP will feature all the group phase matches. Of them, Group-B matches will be hosted by BKSP in Savar, whilst Cox’s Bazar venues will feature Group-A matches. Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium will host the semi-finals and final of the tournament.
