Three brothers in Moheshpur upazila have been daily manufacturing about 250 cricket bats in their remote village. At least 30 technicians and carpenters work in their factories.
Hundreds of cricket-loving youths in Jhenidah and other parts of the country have been practising with these locally made quality bats.
One of the three entrepreneurs, Rajendra Nath Das, said he and his two brothers, Sadhan Das and Shyamol Das, had started manufacturing handmade bats about 21 years back.
About 30 technicians were seen cleaning pieces of wood and making bats without using any modern machinery there. The rough wooden pieces are furnished with care so that they can be turned into a cricket bat within a few minutes.
Usually children’s bats are sold for Tk. 50–150, while bats for adults are sold for Tk. 200–300.
Sportsmen and businessmen from Jhenidah and other parts of the country rush at these factories to place orders.
The brothers said they have constructed pucca houses and purchased some land in the village for the future of their children. They also said that their bats are in great demand in the market.
They, however, said that they cannot expand the factories due to lack of money.
Financial assistance from any bank or financial institutions would help them in this regard, they added.
