A rookie Bangladesh will start their campaign in the  Bangamata Asian Senior Women’s Central Zone International Volleyball Championship today when they will face Afghanistan at 4pm at Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in the capital.

However, Kyrgyzstan will take on Maldives in their very opening match of the five-nation tournament at 10am at the same venue. Thereafter a brief opening ceremony will take place at 3pm.

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is expected to inaugurate the six-day meet as the chief guest.

Bangladesh will play their remaining matches against The Maldives, Nepal and Kyrgyzstan on November 10, 12 and 13 respectively. All the four foreign teams have already arrived in Dhaka and started practice session at Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium.

The tournament will be held on a round robin league system. The top two teams will lock horn in the final scheduled to be held on November 14 at 3 pm following the third-place deciding encounter at 1 pm.

Most of the Bangladesh spikers will make their debut in international volleyball in this tournament. The team had a long practice session at the venue on the pre-match day of the tournament although they are preparing for the tournament for last three months.

Bangladesh Volleyball Federation (BVF) General Secretary Ashiqur Rahman Miku frankly acknowledged in a pre-tournament press conference on Thursday that no one is expecting an extra ordinary result from the girls. “But I think the girls are ready to put up their best effort against all opponents,” said BVF secretary, who added that in fact the tournament will open the door for Bangladesh girls to earn international match experience.

“With this experience certainly they will show a better show in the upcoming XIII South Asian Games to be held in Kathmandu from December 1.”

In fact, due to lack of necessary initiative by the BVF, Bangladesh are lagging behind in women’s volleyball despite the fact that Bangladesh had participated in a few SA Games volleyball since 1991 in Colombo. Even during the 80s the federation used to organise metropolis women’s volleyball league and it was witnessed by a packed volleyball stadium in the capital.
