Food and nutrition security

Bangladesh has come a long way in increasing food production. This success is matched with the increasing demand of ever-growing population of the country. In future, Bangladesh’s population will naturally increase even more and with it the demand for more food production. In the limited land resources, Bangladesh will have to face this challenge. Now, thrust would be put for increased food production as well as profitability of farmers. The impetus for cultivating more food would certainly increase agricultural activity. Modern technology-based farming would bring more income for the famers.

But at this point of time, the imperative should be on producing food that is safe for human consumption. It is not only necessary to educate farmers on this; time has now come for monitoring agricultural activity as well.

Indiscriminate use of fertilisers and pesticides in agriculture and use of chemicals in livestock rearing and fish farming has greatly threatened the safety of public health in Bangladesh. This problem at the growers’ level must be addressed properly while chalking out the goal of achieving safe and profitable agriculture for sustainable food and nutrition security of the country. The nation cannot afford just to run recklessly for attaining the goal of increased food production and profitability of farmers. Food safety also greatly matters

That is why while putting emphasis on modernisation of agricultural research, education and extension, the agricultural policy makers should be careful. Experts consisting of senior agricultural extension officials and scientists and researchers as well as policy formulators at a recent workshop “Stakeholder Consultation for Preparation of Plan of Action for Implementation of National Agriculture Policy- 2018” in Rajshahi have rightly underlined the need for increasing farmers’ capability and income through institutional infrastructure development and efficient technology services. This, no doubt, is the demand of the time.

The main goal of the nation’s agricultural policy now should be to ensure food security and socio-economic development through productivity of crops, boosting production and raising farmers’ income, diversifying crops, producing safe foods and developing marketing system, profitable agriculture and use of natural resources as the experts have pointed out. But it is also necessary to see  that foods produced are safe in terms of health.
