Damaged Jhenidah bridges hamper traffic on highway

Three damaged bridges in Jhenidah have turned into a death trap for commuters on the Jhenidah-Jashore highway. Large cracks have developed on both sides of the bridge at Chhalabhara, which is about 13 km from the district headquarters. Vehicles are finding it         difficult to cross the bridge.

Construction works of the bridge near Mobarakganj Sugar Mills at Kaliganj has not been completed even after a couple of months. Hundreds of vehicles on the roadside sometimes create a traffic tailback for hours together. The work is not being completed for negligence of the contractor concerned, according to sources.

Truck drivers Abdul Momen and Apurba Ghsh said they felt insecure while crossing the risky bridge areas with loaded trucks.

A number of transport workers have recently been injured in these areas on the highway, they added.

The reconstruction work of the bridge near Jhenidah Sadar Hospital could not be completed for an indefinite time.

Traffic movement is almost suspended as a side of the bridge has been put under barricade.

Locals blame the negligence of the roads and highways (R&H) authorities for the delay in completion of the construction or reconstruction works on the highway.

Executive engineer of the R&H department (Jhenidah), Ziaul Haider, said they had already informed the matter to the higher authorities.  The problem will be resolved within a month or two, he expressed optimism.
