The survey was conducted on 7,270 adults and 2,246 children from April to June this year, with the assistance of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Department of Non-Communicable Disease Control Department and the National Mental Health Institute along with the help of the World Health Organisation.

Dr Helal Uddin Ahmed, associate professor of National Mental Health Institute said they have conducted this study for three months on adults and children and found that 17 per cent of adults and 13.6 per cent of children in the country have been suffering from various mental health problems.

He, however, said about 8 per cent of patients with mental illness receive treatment in the country. Of them, 80 per cent of patients were received treatment from a skilled physician.
