Khoka laid to rest

Former mayor of undivided Dhaka City Corporation and BNP vice- chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka was laid to rest with state honour beside his mother’s grave at Jurain graveyard in the city after Maghrib prayers yesterday.

He was buried at about 7pm after holding last namaz-e-janaza and giving him state honour. A 17-member police team, led by assistant commissioner Abdul Awal of Dhaka district administration, conveyed him state salute and gave him guard of honour.  

Senior BNP leaders, including secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members- Mirza Abbas and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Abdullah Al Noman and Khoka’s family members and people from different sphere of life were present on the occasion.

Earlier in the day, his body was taken back home from the USA. A flight of Emirates Airline carrying his body landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 8:28am.

BNP Standing Committee Members Mirza Abbas and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku received the body while a number of leaders and activists of the party were present at the airport.

From the airport, Khoka’s body was brought to South Plaza of National Parliament where his second janaza (first one in the country) was held around 11:15am. Later, the mortal remains of the BNP vice-chairman was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar at 12:10pm. Leaders of different political parties including Mojahidul Islam Selim of CPB, Khalequzzaman of Basad, Abu Syed and Subrata Chowdhury of Ganaforum, ASM Abdur Rab of Jasad, Mahmudur Rahman Manna of Nagorik Oikya and Jonayed Al Saki of Gano Sanghati, among others, went to Shaheed Minar to pay tribute to Khoka.

The second namaz-e-janaza of Khoka was held in front of BNP central office at 2pm while third namaz-e-janaza at Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) premises, fourth namaz-e-janaza at Brothers Union ground and fifth at Dhopkhola ground.

The valiant freedom fighter, who had long been suffering from cancer, died at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York on Monday at age of 67.
