FR Tower case

Bail of three accused cancelled

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The High Court (HC) yesterday cancelled a Dhaka Court order that granted bail to three accused in connection with a case filed for forgery over the design of 23-storey FR Tower in Dhaka’s Banani. The HC bench also asked the accused to surrender before the lower court concerned within seven days. The accused are: FR Tower land owner Syed Md Hossain Imam Faruque, Rajuk’s former inspector Md Aurangzeb Siddique Nannu and its former deputy director (estate) Md Sawkat Ali.

In response to three petitions filed by ACC, the HC bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam came up with the order. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the petitions challenging the lower court order that granted them bail in the case. Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan appeared for the ACC and Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state. A Dhaka court granted them bail in August and September in connection with the forgery case filed by ACC. Around 25 people were killed and 73 others injured in the massive fire that broke out in the FR Tower on March 27.

Earlier on June 25, the ACC filed two cases against 23 people, including FR Tower owners and two chairmen of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), for their alleged involvement in illegally extending the tower beyond the permitted number of floors.
