Rifat murder case

Two accused denied bail

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The High Court (HC) yesterday denied bail to two accused including a minor in sensational Rifat Sharif murder case in Barguna. The HC bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman dropped the bail petitions of two accused----Rafiul Islam Rabbi and the 14-year-old accused who are now in jail in the case, from its hearing list.

The HC bench came up with the order following serious objection of Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ulla against their bail saying that they have already given confessional statements to the magistrate in connection with the gruesome killing incident. So, at this stage of the case they cannot be granted bail in the murder case. Both the petitioners submitted the bail petitions before the HC through their lawyers in last week. Advocate Jahangir Hossain and advocate Sagir Ahmed yesterday moved before the HC on behalf of the petitioners during yesterday’s proceedings.

On June 26, Rifat, 25, who used to provide internet services, was hacked to death in broad daylight in front of Minni. A video clip of the incident went viral on social media. In the footage, Minni was seen trying to save her husband from the attackers.

Rifat’s father filed the murder case with Barguna Sadar Police Station against 12 people on the day of the incident. The prime accused in the case, Nayan Bond, was killed in a “gunfight” with police on July 2. Police arrested Minni after a daylong interrogation on July 16. A Barguna court placed her on a five-day remand the following day. Three days later, the court recorded her statement.
