Khoka to be buried tomorrow

Staff Reporter, Dhaka
Khoka to be buried tomorrow

Former mayor of the undivided Dhaka City Corporation Sadeque Hossain Khoka will be buried beside the graves of his parents at Jurain graveyard in the capital as per his last wish. All necessary arrangements were completed to bring Khoka's body back to the country. His mortal remains are expected to reach Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8.10 am tomorrow, according to his family and BNP sources. Yesterday, the first namaz-e-janaza for Khoka, a valiant freedom fighter and vice-chairman of the BNP, was held at Jamaica Muslim Heights in USA at 8.30 am (Bangladesh time). Four more namaz-e-janaza will be held for the late leader after his body reaches the country and before its burial. The second namaz-e-janaza will be held at South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad at 11 am tomorrow. Next, his body will be taken to Shaheed Minar and kept there for an hour—from 11 am to 12 noon—to allow people to pay their last respects. The third namaz-e-janaza will be held in front of the BNP central office at Naya Paltan after zohr prayer, while the fourth namaz-e-janaza will be held at Dhaka South City Corporation at 3 pm. His body will then be taken to his Gopibagh residence. The fifth and last namaz-e-janaza will be held at the Dhupkhola ground after asr prayer. Later, he will be buried at Jurain graveyard.

Meanwhile, the BNP will observe a countrywide mourning day today to condole the death of Khoka, who was also president of the BNP’s Dhaka city unit. BNP senior joint secretary general Rizvi Ahmed announced the mourning day programme at a press conference at the party central office yesterday. During the programme, BNP will hoist the party flag at its offices in the country, wear black badges and offer Qurankhwani.

Khoka (67), who was suffering from cancer and other complications for a long time, had died around 1.50 pm (BST) on Monday in USA. He had been undergoing treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York since October 18. He is survived by his wife Ismat Ara, daughter Sarika Sadeque, sons Ishraque and Isfaque Hossain. Khoka went to the US along with his wife in 2014 for treatment. The validity of their passports had expired in 2017.
