BUET students to return to classes if demands met

Students of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have stayed away from classes and exams for a month now, following the brutal murder of a second-year student of the electrical and electronics engineering department, Abrar Fahad. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) has completed investigation of the case and the charge-sheet is ready.

Inside sources said the charge-sheet will be submitted before the court any day.

Students have several demands, one of them being fast trial in the Abrar murder case. However, they have agreed to participate in classes and exams if some of their demands are met.

The students spoke about these demands during an informal meeting with the administration recently.

According to sources, BUET vice-chancellor Prof. Saiful Islam, Student Welfare Council director Mizanur Rahman, and faculty deans were present at the meeting.

Two of the demands of the students are: permanent expulsion of the accused in the murder of Abrar on the basis of law enforcement agencies' charge-sheet and implementing the punishment of the accused in the ragging incident of Ahsanullah, Titumir, and Suhrawardy halls.

Until these demands are met, the students will boycott all academic activities.
