‘The corrupt are actually robbing people’s rights’

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka

Those who indulge in corruption actually rob other people’s rights and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is there to protect human rights.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) chairman, Iqbal Mahmud, said this while talking to reporters after a meeting with the NHRC chairman, Nasima Begum, yesterday.

A seven-member NHRC delegation, led by her, met the ACC chairman at his Segunbagicha office.

The ACC chairman urged the NHRC members to watch whether ACC officials are involved in violating human rights.

“It is not possible to prevent corruption and human rights without a coordinated effort. We have to work unitedly to ensure good governance in a coordinated way,” Iqbal Mahmud said.

Those who amass people's money through illegal means are violators of human rights, he said.  He also said the ACC would not spare anybody involved in corruption. “Corrupt people will have to face legal action, no matter who they are,” the ACC chairman warned. He observed that a MoU could be signed between the ACC and the NHRC for a stronger bondage between the two organisations as their views and objectives are almost the same.
