‘Action against traffic officials if they misuse new law’

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner, Md Shafiqul Islam, said yesterday that those trying to evade the new Road Transport Act by greasing the palms of law enforcers or by other unlawful means will not be spared. He was addressing journalists at the DMP media centre. "We will provide cameras to our sergeants. If their cameras remain shut, we will assume they are engaging in illegal activities. If any traffic sergeant tries to benefit from the new act, action will be taken against him or her on complaints,” he added.

He mentioned that implementation of the Road Transport Act will take place with small fines in the beginning. "If someone breaks the law, he or she will be fined a small amount. Gradually, the fine amount will be increased," explained Shafiqul.

Mentioning that some of the rules are quite stringent, the DMP boss said: "People will tend to follow the rules in fear of being punished. The software to file cases is being updated. So initially, we will use the analogue system.”
