HC rejects GK Shameem’s plea for opening accounts

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The High Court yesterday rejected a writ petition filed by controversial contractor GK Shameem seeking permission to open his three bank accounts which were frozen by the government following his arrest. The HC bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Md Mahmud Hassan Talukder rejected the petition stating that it was not placed properly before the court.

Advocate Md Oziullah appeared in the court on behalf of the writ petition while Deputy Attorney General Bipul Bagmar stood for the state. On September 20, RAB arrested Shameem, 50, a top government-listed contractor and a well-known Juba League leader, in connection with extortion and tender manipulation.

In their raids at his home and office, RAB seized eight firearms, a huge amount of ammunition, Fixed Deposit Receipt (FDR) worth Tk 1.65 billion, around Tk 18 million in cash, stashes of US and Singaporean dollars, and some foreign liquor, RAB officials said.

Law enforcers filed three cases against him with the Gulshan Police Station on the following day – two cases were lodged under Narcotics Control and Money Laundering Acts while another one was filed on the charge of creating panic among people by brandishing firearms.
