Court corner

No bar to release Latif Siddique

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The High Court (HC) yesterday granted six-month bail to former textiles and jute minister Abdul Latif Siddique in a graft case filed over misuse of power and corruption in selling a state-owned property.

Advocate Shah Manjurul Hoque, counsel for Latif Siddique, told reporters that there is no legal bar for Latif Siddique to walk out jail following the High Court order.

The HC bench comprising Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq came up with the order after hearing on a bail petition filed by Latif Siddique.

The HC also issued a rule asking the ACC and the government to explain why Latif Siddique should not be granted permanent bail in the case.

Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan, counsel for ACC, told reporters that the commission would move an appeal before Appellate Division of the SC seeking a stay on the HC order that granted bail to Latif Siddique.

Aminul Islam, the assistant director of the Anti-Corruption Commission's (ACC) Bogra branch, filed a case against Latif with Adamdighi police in December, 2017.

According to case statement, Latif Siddique misused the power vested upon him as the jute and textiles minister and sold 2.38 acres of land controlled by the Bangladesh Jute Corporation in Adamdighi upazila to one Jahanara Rashid in 2011, without floating a tender.
