Women breaking into more challenging professions

Women breaking into more challenging professions

While women in society have made remarkable strides at the workplace, becoming major income earners for countless families, there are still some areas where the presence of women raises baffled looks. Of course, for Salma Khatun, a locomaster at Bangladesh Railways, no work is beyond the capacity of women. She epitomises a new breed of women in Bangladesh who are not satisfied with a place within the workforce but want to compete for tasks that have been the sole domain of men for too long. Women are now soldiers in the army, flying UN missions as officers of the Bangladesh Air Force, making a mark as tough martial arts experts – a sure sign that the ‘men only’ definition has become obsolete.  But for many like Khatun, who dare to do work which had always been done by men in the past, the social hindrances are many with the first objections usually coming from parents, relatives who want to reinforce a stereotyped role for women.

This is especially true in rural Bangladesh where young women are often discouraged to pursue work which may jeopardise her prospects of marriage. However, many women are actually doing both – earning and performing the duty of a wife, creating a role model for the modern day woman who knows the meaning of multi-tasking.

In helping women reach their true potential, society plus husbands have a major role because without a generous outlook of the spouse, a wife cannot get the moral support to venture into the world to compete for unconventional roles.

Once woman journalists were mainly engaged in editing jobs, whereas, today we see countless young girls pursuing the tasks of reporters in the field.  Such barrier breaking efforts are seen everywhere, some we notice, others we don’t. For instance, the young student who uses her motorbike to supplement her income by offering rides is also a person helping to break outmoded social restrictions.

The support from the family is crucial because once a woman knows that she has her relatives beside her, the desire to excel takes form.   Khatun has been performing her duty with diligence and her husband has always remained beside her; once more men encourage their wives to go after their professional aspirations, the higher the chance for outmoded concepts to dissipate.
