Poverty eradication must to achieve SDGs

Poverty eradication must
to achieve SDGs

Planning Minister MA Mannan while addressing a seminar titled ‘Private sector engagement in attaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Bangladesh: Bonding and Beyond’ at a city hotel on Saturday underscored the need for joint efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The objectives of the SDGs are to make efforts to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure that people from all strata of life enjoy peace and prosperity. What are of vital importance are addressing climate change issue, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities. The goals are interconnected – often the key to success on one will involve tackling issues more commonly associated with another.

The achievement of SDGs warrants the spirit of partnership and pragmatism to make the right choices now to improve life in a sustainable way for future generations. The root causes of poverty should be found out. The strategic plan should focus on key areas including poverty alleviation, democratic governance and peacemaking, climate change and disaster risk, and economic inequality.

The country has made commendable progress on human development. There are bright chances for robust private investment, increased exports and remittance inflows. Remarkable progress has been made in reducing poverty and creating opportunities for the citizens. However, there is no room for expressing complacency. For achieving its growth aspirations, Bangladesh requires to create more and better jobs by boosting private investment, diversifying exports and building human capital.

Achieving the SDGs requires the partnership of governments, private sector, civil society and citizens alike to make sure we leave a better planet for future generations. Emphasis should be given on various issues related to formulating policy and planning for exploration and the best uses of the existing potentialities in the country for successfully achieving the SDGs. Private sector can play a crucial role in this regard. There is no alternative to   exploring the existing potentialities for improving living and livelihood condition of people. The present government has success stories in various sectors. Concentrated government efforts are the demand of the time. Collective effort of all stakeholders is vital for attaining all SDGs and for overall development of the nation.
