Dhaka city AL councils mid-Dec

Dhaka city AL councils mid-Dec

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered Awami League (AL) central leaders to hold the triennial council sessions for the party's city units (Dhaka north and south) within the middle of next month, according to party insiders. AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader informed city unit leaders about the latest decision of party president Hasina, asking them to get prepared for holding the council sessions by December 10–15. Talking over the development, Dhaka South City Unit AL General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad yesterday said: “Yes, the party general secretary has talked to us in this regard. He said that party chief Sheikh Hasina wanted the city units council sessions held before the national council session.”

The unit leaders are, however, yet to announce the dates for the councils of the units in accordance with the party chief’s desire. On April 10, 2016, the late Syed Ashraful Islam, then AL general secretary, announced the names of presidents and secretaries of the Dhaka north and south units. AKM Rahmatullah and Sadek Khan were appointed president and general secretary of the Dhaka north unit while Abul Hasnat and Shah Alam Murad president and general secretary of the Dhaka south unit respectively.

The last council of the Dhaka city AL unit was held on December 27, 2012. According to the AL constitution, the triennial council session of the city unit should be held in every three years. When contacted, AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said, “AL president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed us to hold the council sessions by December 15. City leaders have already been asked to prepare for the triennial council.”

Besides, AL central leaders are now busy with completion of pending council sessions of the party's district, upazila, and thana units ahead of the upcoming national council session, scheduled to be held on December 20-21.

In a meeting at Ganabhaban in September, Hasina expressed her resentment over her party’s central leaders for failing to hold pending district council sessions. She directed them to complete the pending sessions of all party units within December 10. In keeping with the direction of the AL president, the central leaders are now working hard to complete the pending district council sessions by December 10. Meanwhile, AL city unit leaders alleged that the incumbent presidents and secretaries of the two units failed to run the organisation properly since they have been appointed for the positions. The presidents and secretaries even failed to announce full-fledged committees for the city units within three years from the announcement of their names on April 10, 2016.

After the expiry of the three-year tenure, AL city bosses recently announced only city committees, but they have not been able to give thana and ward committees.

AL Dhaka south city unit senior vice-president Abu Ahmed Mannafi told this correspondent that their presidents and secretaries have spoiled the organisation.  “Once we felt proud of our party, but now the situation is pathetic because of some corrupt people like our president and secretary,” he lamented.

“Some leaders are making money and grabbing land using the name of the party. That’s very unfortunate. Our president and secretary inducted them in the committee,” he alleged.

Hailing Hasina’s ongoing cleansing drive within the party, the senior AL city leader called upon the central leaders not to induct controversial and corrupt people in the new committee next time.

AL north unit joint general secretary MA Kader Khan said the incumbent president and secretary absolutely failed to run the organisation properly. The city unit has become weakened in the past three years, he added.

“The president and secretary announced a committee, but our organisational chief, Sheikh Hasina, did not approve it because of controversies centring it,” he said.

Shahidul Islam Mion, a ward-level senior leader of Jatrabari thana, told this correspondent that he has sacrificed everything for the party but got no recognition. “No full-fledged ward committee has been declared in the past 20 years. But the incumbent president and secretary are giving party positions to their own people without approval of the leader(s) concerned,” he said.

“Our president and secretary are doing everything. They don’t invite us to any political or other functions as we have no positions. We are eagerly waiting for the full-fledged committee, but our leaders are yet to give it,” he added.

Earlier, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader had asked AL city unit leaders not to form any pocket committee and induct corrupt, intruders and controversial faces in the upcoming committees in exchange of money. “We want to build a new AL by inducting people with a clean image in the new committees,” he said.
