Cooperatives contribute to boost rural economy: Farhad

State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain on Saturday said the activities of cooperatives are significantly contributing to improve the living standard of rural people.

“We have to strengthen cooperative movement across the country for boosting economic progress,” he told a discussion in the auditorium of district Shilpakala Academy on the occasion of the National Cooperatives Day. The theme of this year is “Philosophy of Bangabandhu, Development in Cooperatives”.

The state minister said the present government is working to expand cooperative activities for lifting rural people out of poverty.

“Cooperatives will supplement the efforts of the government to achieve the status of middle-income country by 2021,” he added.

District Cooperatives Officials Syed Jasim Uddin, officials of local administration and representatives of different organization concerned, among others, addressed the discussion with Deputy Commissioner Md Ataul Goni in the chair.

‘Arms peddler’ held in C'nawabganj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged arms peddler with a pistol, two magazines and five rounds of bullet from a field at Monakasha Chowka village in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj on Saturday night.

The arrestee was identified as Md Rubella Hossain, 22, son of Md Dukhu of Jaminpur village in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district.

Rapid Action Battalion sources said on secret information, an operation team of Rapid Action Battalion-5 from Chapainawabganj camp raided the aforesaid area at around 8:50pm and arrested him with the arms and ammunition.

Later, the arrestee was handed over to Shibganj Police Station. A case was filed in this connection.
