Concerted efforts needed to achieve SDGs in time

UNB, Dhaka

Planning Minister MA Mannan yesterday underscored the need for joint efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. “The more important thing is to work together. Private sector can play a crucial role in this regard. The government is committed to see a good partnership with the sector as well,” he said while addressing a seminar at a city hotel.

General Economics Division (GED) of the Planning Ministry in association with UNDP organised the programme titled ‘Private sector engagement in attaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Bangladesh: Bonding and Beyond.’ The minister said NGOs are also very important for building future Bangladesh. “We’re more efficient and productive. We have to work together now so that the whole society gets benefits.”

He also sought new ideas from local and international communities. Mannan underlined the importance of reducing poverty from the society and establishing fair justice in the country. GED Member (Senior secretary) Dr Shamsul Alam who moderated the programme said the government wants to move forward together with all, including the private sector, civil society and media people. “We need plans and opinions to achieve the government's goal to make the country a developed one by 2041.”

Principal Coordinator (SDGs Affairs) at the Prime Minister’s Office Md Abul Kalam Azad said public and private sector partnership is needed as the government’s goal is to go forward leaving no one behind. “The engagement of private sector is necessary to achieve the SDGs,” he said.
