Primary education must be of quality

Education is the key to a country’s success and primary education is the cornerstone on which this success is built. Noting this importance of primary education, the Anti-Corruption Commission Chairman Iqbal Mahmud rightly urged the relevant authorities to ensure quality education at this level. If the thrust to create people as worthy citizens is not put at school level, it would really be difficult to do so at the higher or higher secondary level since here in the tender age human brain is most receptive to moral precepts and patriotic inspirations.

Recently the ACC chief participated at a view exchange meeting organized by Rajshahi Primary Education Office at the district where primary education officials, teachers, parents, mothers, school managing committee members and others concerned attended. To generate awareness against corruption in children, ACC and schools authorities have been jointly organizing campaign programmes at various parts of the country. This initiative is laudable.

Quality in primary education is also necessary to achieve SDG 4 which calls for attaining inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Over the decades Bangladesh has achieved a lot in terms of providing education to its largely backward masses. As the spectre of extreme poverty is gradually leaving our society, so is the curse of illiteracy.  Even a decade ago, the rate of girl children attending school is much lower. The efforts of inclusive education both by the government and non government organizations are showing good results. The number of dropouts is decreasing every year. Providing free textbooks up to secondary level and stipends to the poor and meritorious students up to degree level are indeed very positive developments in our public education system.

But quality education is still a far cry as there is big gap in this between the schools located in the urban as well as rural areas. This gap must be lessened in the coming years for the balance development of education in the country. There will always be this gap with the tilt towards the urban parts, but this must not be one of that comes from economic inequality. In Bangladesh there are many ultra poor families that fail to send their wards to schools because of financial hardship. Then there is the dropout problem for economic reasons. All these persisting problems have to be addressed for creating a conscious citizenry.
