BCB to host maiden Girls’ U-19 World Cup in 2021

Sports Reporter, Dhaka

In an effort to form a preliminary squad of youth under-19 girls’ cricket team, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) women's wing is drawing up a plan to organise a national cricket tournament for Under-18 eves' cricketers. With the participation of the eight divisional teams, the tournament for the youth girls is scheduled to roll on Mymensingh Circuit House premises’ grounds, starting November 7.

Recently, BCB director and its women's wing committee chairman Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel held a discussion meeting with the general secretaries of the different divisional sports associations for the meet from where he directed them to take necessary measures to make their maiden tournament successful.

BCB women's wing chairman said that they have started the initiative for the tournament around a year back. “We sent letter to every District Sports Association (DSA) across the country seeking a list of five youth budding girls' cricketers at least 10-11 months back. By then, we form a 15-player squad for each division from those listed players with the help of our local coaches and selector,” said Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel.

“In the meantime, we gave them initial training at divisional level since then to prepare them for the tournament from where we will pick a string of potential players for the under-19 team,” Nadel told The Independent.

Coach Ruhul Amin echoed the sentiment and saying that they have started working in the direction of Mollick sir (BCB director I H Mollick) and without whose assistance, it was not possible for them to manage so many girls so quickly.

“We have plans to find out at least 30-32 talented players from the tournament. Throughout the year, we will nurse them by giving proper training,” Ruhul Amin said.

“We will also arrange practice matches for them beside regular drills. Thereafter, we will whittle down the squad from 32 to 25 and then from 25 to 20. We will form the final squad of U-20 from these selected players for World Cup,” Ruhul told this reporter.

In addition, International Cricket Council (ICC) was pining its member nations since the last few years to make ready a youth girls’ team so that they could arrange a flagship event like its youth boys’ Under-19 World Cup.

The World cricket apex body in their October meeting took their final decision to organise a mega event for youth girls in 2021 for what they have been trying for the last few years.

Even the ICC in that meeting unanimously selected Bangladesh as the host country for the maiden edition of the Girls’ U19 World Cup.
