Hajiganj becomes ‘beggar-free’ upazila

Hajiganj upazila has been formally declared 'a beggar-free upazila' yesterday, marking a milestone in the history of Chandpur.

DC Md Majedur Rahman Khan made the declaration at a function held on the premises of the Hajiganj municipality on Thursday afternoon.  

At the programme, a total of 197 beggars have been rehabilitated in Municipal area and 12 unions in the upazila.

Municipal mayor Mahbubul Alam Lipon was the special guest,  while UNO Baishakhi Barua presided over the function. The DC distributed essential materials among  37 beggars in the municipal area for their rehabilitation and survival.

Earlier, all 12 unions of the upazila were declared beggar-free zones from the first week of October till October 30.

In the first week of October, the local lawmaker, Maj. (rtd) Rafiqul Islam, had declared that Hajiganj would be made a beggar-free upazila. All beggars in the upazila would be rehabilitated  and would be provided with essential materials needed for their survival in society. As part of this initiative, Rafiqul Islam started the beggar rehabilitation programme in Rajargaon union and Bakila union on October 13. He distributed essentials among 28 beggars of Rajargaon and 13 beggars of Bakila.

Later, 10 beggars in Kalochow Uttar and 15 in Kalochow Dakshin unions, four in Borkul East and eight in Borkul West unions, 14 in Hatila West and 10 in Hatila East unions, nine in Gondhorvopur Uttar and 11 in Gondhorvopur Dakhshin unions, 13 in Dwadosh union, and 25 in Hajiganj Sadar union  were  provided with  essential materials.

The beggars were provided with house -building materials, goats, rickshaw vans, agricultural items, fishing materials etc. All the rehabilitated beggars will be monitored by local UP chairmen and members.
