Road Safety Act comes into force today

Provision for maximum 5-yr imprisonment and fine up to Tk 5 lakh for accidents and violation of traffic rules
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Road Safety Act comes into force today

The government is going to implement the Road Transport Act 2018 from today (Friday) in a bid to restore discipline on the roads. The new law has provisions for stricter punishment and higher fines for traffic violations and irregularities. It will be strictly implemented, expect traffic officials. Stern action will be taken against vehicles that are not fit, use hydraulic horns and are illegally parked and other irregularities, they said.

The traffic officials said they have already strengthened legal measures against illegal parking by using video footage of vehicles parked this way on either side of the road. This will ensure smooth flow of traffic. The traffic police are noting licence numbers of illegally parked vehicles and taking legal measures.

Talking to The Independent, Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional commissioner (traffic) Mofizuddin Ahmed said the new law has raised fines by two to three times.

He said the traffic division would take

measures to create awareness among

the transport owners and workers before strictly implementing the new law.

Mofizuddin Ahmed said the traffic police are filing about 10,000 –12,000 video cases against illegal parking on roadsides.

He said the Traffic Division would take stern action against vehicles not fit and those without insurance and proper documents. He also said action would be taken for overloading, overspeeding, and drivers without licence.

The fine has been increased from Tk. 5,000 to Tk. 5,00,000, he said.

He called upon transport owners and workers to abide by the law and be informed about the law.

Ahmed said they would brief the media within a couple of days as to how they would implement the law and about its impact.

Deputy commissioner (traffic) of South, Jaydeb Chowdhury, said the new law will help restore discipline on roads.

He also said under Section 105, the law provides a maximum imprisonment of five years and a fine up to Tk. 5 lakh for accidents and violation of traffic rules.

The traffic violators would be fined varying on the seriousness of the offence, he added.

Replying to a question, Chowdhury said the

Traffic Division has forwarded proposal to increase resources for smooth execution of traffic rules.

The Road Transport Bill, 2018 was passed by Parliament on September 19, 2018, keeping the provision of a maximum of 5 years jail, or a fine of Tk 5 lakh, or both for causing severe injuries to or death of any person due to reckless driving. On August 6 last year, the Cabinet Division approved the draft of the Act with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in chiar.
