Hilsa now in abundance as ban ends

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Barishal

Fishermen in Barishal and Bhola started netting hilsa fish in large chunks since Wednesday midnight after a 22-day ban. The ban on netting the popular fish variety started on October 09 and continued till October 30 midnight was imposed considering its safe breeding.

In Barishal markets, hilsa is now available in abundance. But it is alleged that majority of hilsa fishes were caught during the ban and preserved with ice, which apparently reduced the taste and overall quality.

However, fishermen started arriving with hilsa-laden trawlers at the Barishal Port Road wholesale market early yesterday.

Meanwhile in Bhola, thousands of fishermen went to net hilsa in the rivers Meghna, Tetulia and in the Bay following withdrawal of the ban.

They looked ecstatic after catching maunds of hilsa in their nets. And the comparatively higher selling price only brought further smile on their face.

While talking to this correspondent, some of the local fishermen from the Meghna riverbank and the Ilisha Fish Ghat said they went to catch fish on October 30 midnight and came back with a huge catch of hilsa.

This correspondent also visited a couple of kitchen markets in the district town and found that the buyers and sellers were satisfied with reasonable hilsa price and overall good size.

Ajharul Islam, upazila fishery officer of Bhola, said they conducted successful drives during the ban to prevent illegal hilsa fishing.

During the period, a total of 572 fishermen were jailed for violating law, he informed.
