Shamsur Rahman’s 91st birth anniversary

In memory of the prolific figure of Bangla literature noted poet, writer and columnist Shamsur Rahman on his 91st birth anniversary today, Bangla Academy, Jatiya Kabita Parishad, Shamsur Rahman Smrity Parishad are jointly organising a commemorative event at Rabindra Chattar of Bangla Academy in the capital.

The event will feature discussion, poetry recitation and cultural programme with Bangla Academy President and National professor Anisuzzaman in the chair.

Born in 1929, Shamsur Rahman was a Bangladeshi poet, columnist and journalist, who emerged in the later half of the 20th century, wrote more than sixty books of poetry and is considered a key figure in Bengali literature.

Shamsur Rahman’s first book of poetry, ‘Prothom Gaan Dwityo Mrittyur Agey’ (First Song before the Second Death) published in 1960.  His famous poem ‘Shadhinota Tumi Robi Thakurer Ojhor Kobita, Obinashi Gaan’ was written in 1971 during the Liberation War of Bangladesh.

Besides, he wrote novels, children’s literature, and an autobiography. He received ‘Adamjee Award’ in 1962, ‘Bangla Academy Award’ in 1969, ‘Ekushey Padak’ in 1977, ‘Swadhinata Dibosh Award’ in 1991, Mitsubishi Award of Japan in 1992 and many more.

He died on August 17 in 2006 at the age of 77.
