OUR Correspondent, JU

A group of female teachers, officials and employees of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday criticised the protesters for burning vice-chancellors’s effigy recently on the campus claiming that it was symbolic humiliation and violence on women. Under the banner of ‘Female teachers, officers and employees of Jahangirnagar University’, JU VC-backed teachers formed a human chain on Central Shaheed Minar premises on the campus around 10.30am.

Speakers at the programme said that some protesters had burned the VC’s effigy wearing traditional ‘Saree’. It is the symbolic humiliation and violence on women. Prof Rasheda Akhter said, “We became very astonished. How they had done it. Prof Farzana Islam is the first women VC in the country. She is the symbol of successful women. We are strongly protesting such activities that had done by some teachers and students”.

Conducted by Assistant Professor of Journalism and Media Studies Salma Ahmed, over 50 female teachers, officials and staff were present at the programme. After the human chain, protesters met journalists at a press conference held at the lounge of new arts building.

In a written statement, Associate Professor of Marketing department, Barota Chakraborty said, "To oust Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam, some teachers and students have arranged such programmes that are abusive to women. Disrespecting women is not acceptable. Those involved in this incident will have to be brought to justice."

Earlier, a faction of teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University burnt the effigy of Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam on Sunday as part of ongoing protest demanding her resignation, accusing her involvement in corruption and other issues.
