Samrat a victim of politics of vengeance Claims his mother

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Expelled Awami Juba League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat’s mother yesterday said her son was a victim of the politics of vengeance. Demanding immediate release of her son, the 80-year-old Sayeda Chowdhury pleaded that her son was innocent and a victim of personal vendetta. She was speaking at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporter’s Unity. Requesting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to forgive her son, Sayeda said Samrat always worked for the Awami League (AL) with dedication and commitment. “Samrat is your worker. He is like your son. As a mother, I request you to forgive him and release him. Please arrange better treatment for him,” she added. On October 6, RAB arrested Samrat, former president of the Dhaka South Juba League and also an alleged kingpin of the illegal casino business, in the capital.

“Samrat underwent an open heart surgery in 1990. He has been working for the party despite his illness,’’ said Sayeda. The family also mentioned that Samrat was arrested and brought to his Kakrail office where law enforcers searched his office for more than four hours. No media was allowed into the office during the raid. “The live telecast (from outside) showed some law enforcers entering with bags on their back. However, those could not be seen when they were heading out,” Sayeda said. Samrat was not a part of any club where casinos were being run, she added. Samrat’s sister Farhana Chowdhury and brother Rasel Ahmed Chowdhury were present at the press conference.
