Police bars Oikyafront procession

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Leaders and activists of the Jatiya Oikyafront could not take their citizen mourning procession to Shaheed Minar to protest against the killing of BUET student Abrar Fahad. They were obstructed by the police within 100 yards from the Jatiya Press Club premises. After a short rally at the Jatiya Press Club auditorium, the scheduled citizen mourning procession, led by top Oikyafront leader Dr Kamal Hossain, was brought out at 5:15pm. The police force deployed within 100 yards of the northwestern gate of the Jatiya Press Club set plastic-made road dividers on the road to Jatiya Shahid Minar. They stopped the procession when it headed towards Kadam Fountain. The law enforcers forced the processionists clear the road for vehicular movement.

Those in the procession bearing flags and wearing black bedges, however, demonstrated for a few minutes and raised slogans demanding exemplary punishment of the killers of Abrar, who was beaten to death by Chhatra League cadres in BUET on October 7.

ASM Abdur Rab, a top leader of the Oikyafront, told the rally they would hold a mourning rally on October 22 at a open place to protest against the police obstruction and demand punishment of Abrar’s killers. Dr Kamal Hossain took part in the procession on a car hoisting a black flag.
