BNP expels lawyer for defending Abrar ‘killer’

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) yesterday expelled advocate Morsheda Khatun Shilpi, executive committee member of the pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, for defending one of the accused in BUET student Abrar murder case in a court. The BNP took action against Shilpi and criticised her role in favouring Abrar’s killers at a time when the party has described Abrar as the first martyr to protect the country’s independence and sovereignty, says a  press release.

In a press release, the BNP mentioned that Shilpi was expelled for her involvement in "anti-organisational activities". The party, however, did not explain as to how the lawyer had acted against the organisation. Abrar, 21, a resident of Sher-e-Bangla Hall of Buet, was beaten to death in the wee hours of Monday, allegedly by some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists of the university.

Abrar’s father Barkatullah filed a case against 19 BCL leaders and activists, including Mehedi Hasan Rasel, Muhtasim Fuad, Mehedi Hasan Robein and Muzahidur Rahman Muzahid, with Chawkbazar police station in the capital in connection with killing of his son. Shilpi appeared before the court on Tuesday in favour of Muzahid, triggering widespread criticisms on social media.

When contacted, Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, convenor of the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, said Shilpi had been expelled from the party, they did not need to expel her separately from the lawyers' forum. “Since she (Morsheda) has been expelled from the party (BNP), she no longer exists in the forum,” he explained.

He also said though a lawyer could defend any accused, Shilpi's statement in favour of Abrar killers was objectionable. Shilpi was made a member of a 179-member convening committee of the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum formed on October 3 last.
