The 21st edition of the National Cricket League (NCL) will roll onto the four different grounds across the country today.

A total of eight teams, splitting into two tiers, will take part in the league, sponsored by Walton Group.

It will be fourth time after being introduced tier system in NCL. Tamim Iqbal-inspired Chattogram Division will face off Mahmudullah Riyad led Dhaka Metro in the round one of the Tier-2 fixture at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur.

The fans will be enlightened with the big match at the NCL opener as national stalwarts Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah Riyad would clash for their respective teams.

Tamim will be a part of his hometown Chattogram Division, though he is not the captain of the team as Mominul Haque is given the role. But

Mahmudullah Riyad will lead the Dhaka Metro for the first two rounds. Most likely Marshal Ayub will wear the captain band from third round.

But those two stars were not regular in NCL. While Tamim is playing this tournament after four years, Mahmudullah played just one NCL game, that too in 2017, in last five years.

However it is obvious that the duo would try to guide their respective

sides into the Tier-1 by helping them begin their campaign on the right note.

And both of them are expected to be hogging the entire spotlight in the opening phase.

Both Chattogram and Metro held their pre-match day practice session at the National Cricket Academy of the SBNCS yesterday.

On behalf of Dhaka Metro, spin all-rounder Elias Sunny spoke to media, where he said they have planned to evolve through the league match by match strategy to step into the top tier.

Sunny also said they are a balanced team that might be kept them ahead of the competition than the other competitors.

“We, the senior players are playing together for a few days. For this, the combination and gel of the team is in good shape. This time senior players were ahead in beep test. Overall, it’s a balance team. Everything is in this team,” said Elias Sunny.

“When a performer of the international cricket comes to play at domestic cricket, it puts a big impact on the team. Last year he was not with us. But this time he is with us. It’s a big acknowledgement for us,” Sunny told media at the NCA ground in Mirpur.

“We have prepared our plan in a different way. We want to evolve through the league match by match approach. Our main target is to break into the Tier-1,” he added.

“I have a target to get down batting a bit ahead. But I have to think and move ahead to mull over the words of the team management and captain. If I get a  chance to bat at top-order, I will then try to bat well.”

“I think, each team has to do well in the first innings in the four-day match. It’s easier for the team if it can do well in the first innings. It’s possible to play well. Dhaka Metro always does well in the second innings than the first innings. We will try so that we can do well in first inning by doing batting and bowling well.”

Chattogram Division head coach Aftab Ahmed said they are excited to get Tamim Iqbal and hoping to fare well in the league.

“Getting Tamim Iqbal is a big achievement. Maybe our team debuted 4-5 players in the match. The young players will get a chance to share the dressing room is a big opportunity for them,” Aftab Ahmed said.  “He will come after a long time. I hope he will come for doing well. It’ll be better for Chattogram. It’ll also be better for cricketers. We are so much excited with Tamim,” Aftab said.

At Fatullah’s Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, Dhaka Division will take on Rajshahi Division in Tier-1 match.

On the other hand, Rangpur Division will compete against Khulna Division in the other Tier-1 match at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna.

At Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi, Barishal Division will vie against Sylhet Division in the tier-2 encounter.

The NCL is seen as the preparation platform for the players in the upcoming two-match Test series against India with which they will start their

World Test Championship journey.
