JAHA ALAM IMPRISONMENT

Sonali Bank punishes 8 staff over irregularities

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Sonali Bank authorities yesterday submitted a report before the High Court (HC) over the case of the imprisonment of innocent Jaha Alam.

The Bank authorities also have taken departmental action against eight people who were involved.

In the meantime, the bank authorities have dismissed one of their employees, Mainul Haque, and other seven were awarded various punishments.

The hearing will be held on Wednesday in this regard.

Jaha Alam, a jute mill worker hailing from Tangail, had been serving a jail term in place of the real accused, Abu Salek, implicated in 33 cases of embezzlement involving Tk 18 crore from Sonali Bank.

The 416 page report said that eight persons were involved with the Jaha Alam incident and one of them was dismissed, whereas the other seven faced salary cuts.

The lawyer of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) feels this will be effective in indentifying the main culprits.

Earlier, on February 4, Jaha Alam was released from jail following a High Court order.

The incident came to light following a newspaper report published on January 30 under the headline.

‘Wrong accused in jail in 33 cases: Sir I am Jaha Alam, not Salek.”

The HC passed a suo moto order after Supreme Court lawyer Amit Das Gupta placed the news report before the High Court.

ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam told the court that the ACC had filed the cases against Abu Salek after getting information from Sonali and Bangladesh Banks, while ACC official Abdullah Al Jahid mentioned Jahalam name in charge sheet after investigation and the local chairman of Tangail also identified him.
