Woman killed ‘by stepson’

OUR CORRESPONDENT, Mymensingh

A woman was hacked to death allegedly by her stepson in Nandail upazila of Mymensingh Friday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Mukta Begum, 30, second wife of Abdul Helim of village Haliura in Nandail. Helim married Mukta some five years ago, after the death of his first wife but since the marriage, there were family feuds with the children of the first side, said Monsur Ahamed, officer-in-charge of Nandail Police Station.

Jibon Mia, 19, had an altercation with Mukta over family issues on Friday afternoon. At one stage, Jibon hit Mukta with a kitchen cutter, hacked her indiscriminately, leaving her injured critically around 3pm.

Hearing screams of Mukta, neighbours rushed to the spot, rescued her and took to Gafargaon Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared her dead, said the OC.

Local people chased Jibon but he managed to flee the scene, the OC informed.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police detained Abdul Helim for interrogation but Jibon is still at large. Police drives are on to arrest Jibon, the prime suspect, the OC informed.
