Four killed in road accident

At least four people were killed and 32 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses on Thakurgaon-Panchagarh Highway yesterday.

The deceased were identified as Babul, 28, a minibus driver AbulKalam Azad, 50, son of Abdul Majid,Mojibur Rahman, 75, and Quamruzzaman, 35, of Sadar upazila.

The accident took place at Salandar Bhutpara in the upazila around 10am.

A Panchagarh-bound bus hit the Thakurgaon-bound minibus of 'Nirnoy Paribahan', killing three people on the spot, said Sub-Inspector Firoza Begum of Sadar Police Station.

Police and fire service officials rescued the victims and   sent them to the Sadar Hospital.

Later, another injured man succumbed to his injuries at Sadar Hospital in the afternoon.

Woman hacked dead ‘by son’

A woman was hacked to death allegedly by her drug addict son at village Ishwargram in Muktagacha upazila of Mymensingh yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Rokeya Begum, 65, wife of Abul Kalam of village Ishwargram.

Quoting family members and local people, officer-in-charge of Muktagacha Police Station Mohammad Ali Mahmud said among three sons of Rokeya, Rubel Mia, 28, is the second and he is a drug addict.

Rubel used to torture his family members for money to buy drugs on various occasions, said the OC.

Rubel who has also developed mental problems recently demanded money from his mother on Wednesday.

As Rokeya denied to pay the money, Rubel locked in an altercation with her and at one stage, he hacked Rokeya in her neck and head with a vegetable cutter, leaving her injured critically around 5am on Wednesday, said the OC.

She was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) from where she was referred to Dhaka as her condition deteriorated, the OC said. But she died on the way around 11am. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to MMCH morgue for autopsy.

Meanwhile, police arrested Rubel for his alleged involvement in the killing. No case was lodged yet.

Khasru urges officials and public reps to work together

State minister for fisheries and live stock Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru yesterday laid importance on coordinated efforts of government officials and public representatives for smooth and timely implementing of all development projects.

Both the government officials and public representatives have to work together with utmost sincerity and honesty and patriotic zeal to implement the development projects, he said. Khasru said this at a meeting of upazila development coordination meeting at upazila conference hall.

Chairman of Netrakona Sadar Upazila Tafsiruddin Ahmed presided over the meeting while Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sumona -AL-Mazid, commander of Muktizoddha Sangsad Ayub Ali were present, among others.

Two minors drown in Jashore

A pair of cousins fell victim to the all-too familiar yet ‘silent killer’ of children in the country, as they drowned in a pond near their home in the village of Narikelbaria, in Bagharpara upazila of Jashore on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Saad, 3, son of Jamal Uddin and his cousin Alamin, 4, son of Syed Ali of the village.

Family members said that the children were playing beside their family pond.

Around 1:30 pm - that window around noon when most drownings have been known to occur - the families became aware that the children were missing.
