OUR CORRESPONDENT, Noakhali
Huge hilsa haul brings cheer to fishermen

Finally, fishermen are happy over a good haul of hilsa fish in the Meghna River in the Ramgati upazila in Laximpur from Tuesday night.

Fishermen, wholesale dealers as well as consumers are elated as a huge amount of hilsa has been netted of late in the two costal districts of Noakhali and Laxmipur.

All fishing ‘ghats’ of the Laxmipur coastal district are now crowded.

People are gathering at the fishing ghats in Alexander under Ramgati in Laxmipur.

A recent visit to the Alexander hilsa ghat in Ramgati by this correspondent revealed fishermen preparing their trawlers, boats and fishing nets to go to the river Meghna to catch hilsa. Trawlers were being towed to the river from the dockyard. Fishing nets, fuel and essentials were being loaded on to the boats.

More than 400 fishermen had gathered, waiting to set off on their fish operations.

The price of hilsa was about fifty per cent less compared to what it was before. Now, a big-size hilsa is selling at Tk 900 to 1,000 and the medium-size is selling for Tk500 to Tk 700 and the small ones for Tk 400 to Tk 450.

Abu Bokkar, a fisherman at Alaxander, , “We are now trying to recover our losses. We have become defaulters in making loan money repayments at high interest rates. Many wholesalers also came to the ghat because they had invested money.

Some fishermen had been fined Tk 91,200 said, Mohibullah Laxmipur district fisheries officer. About 1,40,300 square metres of banned current nets were sized and burnt.

District Fisheries Officer Dr Md Motalab said, “If the mother hilsa is saved, it is the fishermen who ultimately benefit.”

He added that all the ghats of Noakhali and Laximpur Ramgati and Kamalnagor were busy these days. A huge amount of hilsa was being caught and transported to other districts.

When this correspondent visited the ghats on Tuesday, it found that fishermen were staying on the Meghna in their boats day and night, making a huge haul of hilsa.

Anower Hossain, a buyer said, the fish was being packed for supplied to other countries.

Fishermen were returning with catches at the terminals that were crowded by traders. A large quantity of the fish was being sent to Dhaka.

At present, the big-size fish is being sold at Tk 24 to 25 thousands per maund (37.38k) .

AKM Mohibullah, Laximpur district fisheries officer, told the Independent that due to the optimum netting of hilsa in the Meghna, poor and limited-income people can now buy the delicious fish at affordable prices. But the big ones could only be bought by moneyed people.

Nearly 60,000 fishermen are catching fish in the river Meghna.
