Barishal Education Board suspends HSC results and studentships of 18

Barishal Education Board
STAFF REPORTER, Barishal

The Barishal Education Board (BEB) has suspended the results and studentships of 18 HSC examinees for three years and also suspended an office assistant for forgery in an HSC exam paper of 2019, said officials at the BEB office yesterday (Wednesday).

However, the accused examinees alleged that their confession was taken from them by board officials through coercion and torture while the accused BEB staffer denied the allegation against him.

BEB chairman Prof Md Younus acknowledged the facts. He said Prof. Moazzem Hossain, director, Secondary and Higher Education (Barishal region), will lead a three-member inquiry committee in this connection.

Prof Yunus said the higher mathematics (creative questions–CQ) subject of the HSC exam was held on May 14. During scrutiny, it was found that the answer-sheets of 18 examinees were the same. The BEB authorities withheld their results.

After the results were published on May 17, 2019, those 18 examinees were summoned to the BEB office and asked to write answers to these question papers on August 5, 6 and 7. But they failed to obtain pass marks.

During interrogation, one examinee, identified as Nusrat Kabir, confessed that they changed correct answer-sheets with their exam papers with the help of Gobinda Chandra Pal, an office assistant of BEB. She gave a written confessional statement.

After that, action against the accused 18 examinees and board staffer was taken on August 9. A probe committee was formed on August 12, the BEB chairman added.

But Nusrat alleged that the BEB chairman forced her to sign the confession under threat and torture and also accused BEB staffer Pal of being involved in this fraud case. Nurul Kabir, Nusrat’s father, alleged that his daughter was beaten by the board chairman, who forced her to sign the confession paper on August 5 at the BEB office.

He said, “An allegation was lodged with Airport police station on August 9. We also submitted a prayer to the Barishal Metropolitan Magistrate’s court after failing to get any action. But the court, too, rejected our prayer.”

Pal denied being involved and of having any connection with the accused examinees. He claimed he was a victim of a conspiracy of his enemies.

Mahabubul Alam, officer-in-charge of Airport Police, said, “We investigated after receiving an allegation of an examinee being tortured at the BEB office, but found no witness or evidence to support that allegation.”
