BNP to join Dhaka city corpn polls

RAFIQUL ISLAM AZAD, Dhaka

The BNP is contemplating taking part in the coming elections for two Dhaka city corporations, and the party is looking for its mayoral candidates for the polls, according to party insiders. According to Election Commission sources, elections for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) are likely to be held in December this year, or early next year. The BNP has decided, in principle, to take part in the local government polls, but the party is yet to take a formal decision over contesting the DNCC and DSCC polls, as the EC is yet to take a conclusive decision over the polls, said the party leaders.

Talking to The Independent, a leader, however, said that the party high command has already started enquiring about suitable mayoral candidates for the city corporation polls.

They also hinted that the party this time may pick two vital youth leaders to contest the polls. A senior leader, preferring anonymity, however, said Tabith Awal, son of Abdul Awal Mintoo, is likely to be picked as the mayoral candidate for the DNCC polls, and Ishraq Hossain, son of former Dhaka mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, for the DSCC polls.

He said the party high command wants to field youngsters to fight the civic polls as mayoral candidates.

The leader said both Tabith, who was selected earlier to contest the by-poll of the DNCC last time and later decided not to take part in the poll, and Ishraq were given tips to work in their respective areas. BNP standing committee member, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, said there is a possibility of taking part in the city corporation polls. “There are chances to take part in the elections since the party (BNP) is a pro-election political organisation and believes in democracy,” he said.

The senior leader, however, said they are yet to discuss the issue and no formal decision has been taken so far.

After the December 30 parliamentary polls, which the BNP termed rigged, the party had deviated from its policy to take part in elections under the present government.

As part of the decision, the party boycotted by-polls to the vacant mayoral post of the DNCC and upazila election early this year. The party even expelled about 200 party leaders who took part in the upazila polls in violation of the party decision. Later, the party made a U-turn by joining Parliament and participating in elections, including the by-poll for the Bogura-6 constituency.
