Violence against women

WOMEN'S RIGHTS ACTIVISTS BELIEVE THAT THE STATE MUST DO MUCH MORE ON THIS ISSUE BEING A SIGNATORY TO THE UN CONVENTION ON THE ELIMINATION OF ALL FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN
Violence against women

Violence against women is continuing unabated in Bangladesh. On Tuesday bodies of two victims of violence were recovered in Chandpur and Kushtia. Violence against women exists only in lower and middle class, but highly educated women also suffer because of male dominant society. It might be physical, sexual, or psychological violence. This is deeply believed by many in our society that women are inferior to men.

The basic reasons of violence against women are lack of education and unawareness, male dominant society and low socio-economic status of women in this country. Many women are compelled to bear torture and violence. If any woman tries to raise voice for her rights then she has to face physical, mental and sexual violence and torture so few want to take this risky step. Many women do not report it because of their family pressure and cultural values and threaten from their husbands. When these women do not have any choice then they attempt suicide. In spite of being armed with various laws, the fight against harassment and various acts of violence that include rape, murder and domestic abuse, remains an uphill struggle. According to a report by Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), a leading human rights body, at least 1,648 women faced six types of violence in 2018. And although the government has introduced a telephone hotline which has been receiving calls of an average of 2,000 complaints daily, the fight to curb violence against women remains a challenging one.

Women's rights activists believe that the state must do much more on this issue being a signatory to the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). In the backdrop of observing the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women yesterday, the fact remains that government-sponsored awareness campaigns have not done much to change societal prejudice that helps to perpetuate the malaise of violent crimes against women. In this regard, experts have pointed out that although speedy tribunals have effectively dispensed cases of violence against children, the rest of the judiciary, i.e. the regular tribunals, has lagged behind when it comes to the violence women face in society.

It should be kept in mind that women, along with men, are equal contributors to the progress and development of every nation or state. Therefore, women should also be treated as equal citizens and be given their due rights with equal opportunities.
