Revisiting August 21: A paper-book yet not ready

Revisiting August 21: A
paper-book yet not ready

Politics is about confrontation but never about trying to kill or maim an opponent; however, that is exactly the tactic followed on Aug 21, 2004, when an AL rally came under grenade attack. After the carnage, 24 people lay dead with more than 300 injured. The current prime minister of the country, Sheikh Hasina, then in the opposition, was at the rally and fortunately, left with ear injuries though it’s natural to state that the psychological trauma was monumental.

The date is recorded in infamy and one of the worst cases of political violence the country has seen. While the work is underway to prepare a paper-book containing all evidence, data, statements and other documents related to the incident, there is a feeling in authority that the necessary tasks should be done swiftly and the hearing on death references started without delay to bring the perpetrators to justice. Many quarters may feel that the exhortation emanates from a desire to exact vengeance though that is hardly the case.

The main reason why the case should be processed without delay is because the punishment of the perpetrators will show that those who mastermind such heinous crimes cannot escape justice. From the angle of general crime, the Aug 21 attack saw 24 people dead, sustaining horrible injuries from splinters from grenades which were later found to be of military grade. In addition, hundreds of people were critically wounded with many still suffering from recurring nightmares from the ghastly incident. These people are members of the public, who congregated that day as part of a democratic process. Shockingly, their lives were either cut short or severely scarred and the nation has the duty to ensure the right punishment for those who engineered such a condemnable deed.

On 21 August, 2004, the AL leader and workers had gathered to take part in an anti-terrorism rally but they became victims of terror, sponsored likely by those who had clandestine assent from authority. Once the paper-book is ready, an HC bench will hear and dispose of the death references. According to the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), if a lower court orders death penalty, the verdict is examined by HC for confirmation of the punishment. Therefore, to showcase justice not only for political leaders but also for general people who either died or were injured, the paper-book has to be completed fast to ensure early death reference.
