New tournament for teen girls in Jan

MD ABU TALHA SARKER, Dhaka

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) women’s wing was preparing to arrange a new tournament for the youth girls for so long.

The BCB unanimously approved the tournament and its budget in their recently-concluded executive board meeting.

As of now they are mulling to get underway the tournament. If everything is okay, the competition for Under-18 is expected to kick-start in January, 2020 just after the conclusion of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, in-charge of the BCB women’s wing came up with the disclosure to The Independent at his BCB office of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur.

Fahim informed that they have already finished their ground works from the procedure of players selection and forming all the divisional teams along with their training.

“We had started the process of players’ selection so many days back. As a part of players’ selection, we had sent letters to District Sports Associations (DSAs) across the country, seeking a list of three-five budding women’s players whose age will be in between 16-17,” said Nazmul Abedeen.

“We, therefore, get their lists from where we chose 200-plus players with the help of our coaches and selectors by playing practice matches. By then, we purged it again and formed a 14-15 member divisional team with the potential players. Now they are regularly practicing at their respective division for the new tournament,” Fahim told this reporter.

“We will then pick 20-22 players in the aftermath of the tournament to form Under 19 Cricket Team, who will practice round the year to prepare themselves for the maiden edition of the ICC U19 Women’s World Cup,” he added.

It’s learnt from BCB insiders that ICC earlier informed its member countries that they are planning to host World Cup for Under-19 women’s cricketers in the aspects of male’s ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

The recently-concluded ICC Board Meeting in England yet another reminded its member countries to prepare them for the first edition of the mega-event because the showcase tournament will be held from now though the apex body is yet to announce its schedule. Even they didn’t define its host country yet.

Bangladesh had no such build up in the women’s wing. So, the board provided necessary directives to form a team with the blend of the under 16-18 players who can play the World Cup.

BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon informed media upon his return from the recently-concluded ICC Board Meeting in England that they have applied to World Cup informing their eagerness to play the maiden edition of the Under-19 Women’s World Cup. The maiden edition of the World Cup will be held on Twenty20 format,” the BCB president added.

“When it was informed by the ICC’s earlier meeting that they will organise a World Cup for Under-19 Women’s cricketers, Bangladesh unlike other countries start taking their preparation for it so that we could not miss the event,” said Nazmul Hassan.

“We thereafter gave the necessary directive to prepare a new set-up for the Under-19 women’s cricketers. We gave our approval to form a team. Along with that, they can play in the tournament for their preparation. For this, we have given necessary approval of the tournament and its budget for it,” he said.
