Mash seeks 2-month time to ponder his retirement

Sports Reporter, Dhaka
Mash seeks 2-month time
to ponder his retirement
Mashrafe Bin Mortaza

Bangladesh ODI captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza on Saturday requested Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to give him two-month time to think about the final decision of one-day international cricket career.

As a result, the BCB is being dropped of their plan what they were thinking of organising an ODI series against Zimbabwe following the conclusion of the tri-nation series to give Mashrafe a grand farewell for his retirement from one-day international cricket.

It is got to know after BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon held discussion with Mashrafe at the BCB management office of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

Later, Papon admitted that they talked with Mashrafe over his retirement and asked him whether they will arrange an ODI series against Zimbabwe after the triangular series to which the one-day captain showed his disinclination. “Mashrafe comes here for two reasons. Shakib met with me before his departure for the United States of America (USA). I discussed with him regarding head coach as he was also our captain (Test and T20). Mashrafe is also our captain. Before finalising the head coach, we also talked with him. Basically the talks have been held over the appointment of the head coach,” Nazmul Hassan Papon said.

“We had another issue. Will we arrange any ODI series or match against Zimbabwe? We asked him (Mashrafe) what he thinks about arranging an ODI match against Zimbabwe,” Nazmul told media.

“He (Mashrafe) thinks that it’s too early as we have so many delays of playing ODI match or matches. Before March, 2020, we have no ODI. It’ll be edge for him if he gets a two-month time. And then, he wants to decide his final decision what he does (about retirement from international cricket). We told him that’s okay. We will wait for two months as we’ve no ODI games ahead,” he added.

Mashrafe didn’t play any Test since 2009. He then bade goodbye T20 cricket in 2017. BCB never think such plan to give a befitting send-off to any player in the past but in Mashrafe’s case they mulled over it, acknowledging his contribution to the country’s cricket. However, BCB president said the player also should think about his future and discuss with the board.

“In that case, the board can take decision to how it can make the farewell memorable one,” Papon said.

“But the players in our country are not used to think about his retirement. The situation is always like that they want the board to discard them,” he concluded

BCB director Naimur Rahman Durjoy voiced the same sentiment with the president, stating that they can set an exemplary example through Masharafe’s retirement case.

“We’ve seen on many occasions of players’ abrupt decision of retirement that is an embarrassment for both player and the board. If we could do what the board has planned for Mashrafe, it would be an example in our country,” Durjoy said.

“I was a player. I also want that player inform the board of their retirement plan so that the board and we all together can give them a farewell in a befitting manner,” he said signing off.
